Keeping Warm

Nothing like a cup of joe.

Nothing like a cup of joe.

It’s winter.  You can tell because the sun has disappeared from the sky and the air is heavy with grey ocean mist.  Every once in a while I emerge from hibernation and make a beeline for one of Lima’s sweet cafes.  Here are my favorites. Continue reading

The Week of Expensive Lunches

I’ve kind of decided that lunch is my favorite meal.  It helps that Peru really, really knows how to do lunch: fresh fish, extensive menús, restaurants open late into the afternoons.  This past week we decided to really enjoy the lunch culture here in Lima and treat ourselves to the best of the variety of cuisines this international city has to offer.

A closed door reveals the only sign advertising the restaurant.

The first time I tried to find this hidden restaurant, it was a hot Sunday in March and we wandered for almost an hour, circling the worn walls of the Iglesia San Pedro.  We knew it was near; we had it surrounded.  We finally discovered the restaurant/convent next to a beautiful old Spanish-style house: the house was open, L’Eau Vive, unfortunately, was not.  I added it to my list of restaurants to try and, while downtown last week to order some frightfully ugly business cards, I decided to give it another try.  It was open, and full of business people taking their lunch breaks at this well-known but quasi-secret restaurant, owned and run by the French nuns who live in the convent above.  Continue reading
